What is student wellbeing?

Wellbeing is the state of living a healthy lifestyle and not just how we feel but how we function and participate in the community. At school, a students wellbeing is significantly empowered by whole school approaches to health and wellbeing. The provision of  a safe and accepting environment in which students are supported to explore and develop positive mental, emotional and social awareness with a keen sense of belonging are the essence to improved health outcomes.

Shine wellbeing programs

Shine’s Wellbeing Primary School Programs are designed for years 5&6 senior students, to build and develop positive relationships to self, community and nature by developing life skills and knowledge that empowers health and wellbeing.

Our evidence based practices of positive psychology, public health promotion, nutritional science, social and emotional learning, ecology and neuroscience are centred around the five key measurable components of wellbeing:

  • Connection: Developing relationships to self, others and nature.

  • Being active: Engaging in activities that are stimulating and inspiring.

  • Engagement: Trying new things that build confidence and create a sense of achievement.

  • Self-awareness: Developing tools to enhance sense of self.

  • Contribution: Kindness and gratitude to self, others and community.

Why is wellbeing advocacy in education so important for pre adolescent children?

The school setting, its community and its overarching culture, is the most powerful platform for health promotion and advocacy, only secondary to that of family setting.

A child’s school community and setting is therefore a well acknowledged and most ideal place for public health promotion and advocacy, providing consistent and considerable opportunity during developmental life stages to model and influence health behaviours.

Health education within the school setting, engaging with primary school children at such an influential time in their development and when delivered within a community setting, is paramount to both the short and long term health outcomes of Australia’s expanding population.
